The era of ultra-cheap solar modules is ending

Rows of solar photovoltaic modules in a field

Solar module prices fell to historic lows of around USD 0.07 to 0.09 per watt through 2024 and early 2025, down from about USD 0.25 in 2021, as Chinese manufacturers competed at a loss. That is now reversing. China abolished VAT export rebates on photovoltaic products from 1 April 2026, and European delivered prices, near USD 0.11 per watt in late 2025, are projected to rise around 14% to roughly USD 0.126 by late 2026.

With close to 98% of Europe's module imports coming from China, and procurement rules under the Net Zero Industry Act starting to favour non-Chinese supply in some public tenders, buyers who plan volumes early and diversify sourcing will hold the advantage.
